Dr Hazel Carrick is a Clinical Psychologist and qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Hazel has significant experience working in specialist NHS services, supporting children, adults, couples and families to improve their overall psychological well-being. Hazel is experienced in providing psychological therapy for a range of difficulties and has a particular interest in supporting clients who are experiencing acute emotional distress and trauma.
Hazel is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and is accredited with the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).
Areas of Specialist Experience
Hazel is experienced in providing psychological therapy for many different psychological difficulties, such as anxiety, worry, phobias, obsessive-compulsive problems, depression, trauma reactions, difficulties managing emotions, relationship and interpersonal difficulties and stress.Hazel has specialist experience working with clients at times of acute emotional distress, personal crisis, trauma, bereavement and adjustment. In her previous NHS roles, she supported individuals and couples through fertility difficulties, pregnancy loss and stillbirth. She is also experienced in providing psychological intervention for families who have an acutely unwell child and the families of children with significant physical and learning disabilities. Hazel has also provided psychological therapy for individuals living with medical conditions, such as cancer, chronic pain and chronic fatigue. Hazel’s NHS role, involves working with individuals who are experiencing a significant deterioration in their mental health, requiring an inpatient admission and supporting them in their recovery.
Hazel draws upon a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches that are tailored according to clients’ individual concerns and needs. Hazel focuses on working with clients to develop a shared understanding of their difficulties in the context of their prior experiences and current life circumstances. In therapy, she supports clients to overcome these difficulties by building upon their strengths and developing new skills and strategies. Hazel believes that having a good therapeutic relationship, in which therapist and client work together, is essential to this process.
Hazel has specialist training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT and ‘third wave’ CBT approaches, such as Compassion-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy. Systemic therapy and attachment models also inform her practice.
